DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

The Rutgers-Camden MFA comprises 42 total credits, or fourteen courses:

Six creative writing workshops (18 credits)
Our workshops are small, personal, and productive.Two of the workshops may be taken at the Summer Writers’ Conferences. In keeping with our multi-genre approach, at least two workshops will be in your genre of concentration, and at least one will be in different genre.

Three literature classes (9 credits)
Our world-class scholarly faculty is at your disposal, and we allow you to pursue your literary interests by taking classes in our graduate program in English.

Two craft classes (6 credits)
Craft classes are literature classes taught from the writer’s perspective. In these classes, we examine the techniques published writers use to create their successful works. Offerings include:

Writing the Child
Translation
The Long Poem
Worldwide Weird: Global Fantasy and Surrealism
Intensive study in Point of View

Thesis Workshop (6 credits)
The thesis workshop will provide you an opportunity to share your thesis with your classmates during your last year in the program, refining and preparing it for submission to agents and presses. It will also include an overview of publishing and editing opportunities.

One elective (3 credits)
Interested in botany? Want to write about a physicist or a history professor? Take a linguistics class, a foreign language, a criminal justice class or a class in the fine arts. We encourage you to branch out, try a new subject - and thus enhance the world you write about. The possibilities are endless.
