Meet Our Students Fall 2016 

Catherine Buck Catherine Buck is a fiction writer proudly from the land of Wawa and full-service gas stations. She attended La Salle University, and has since found her way around the world exploring to 18 or so countries, depending on how you count. She has most recently returned from a position coordinating volunteers in Nicaragua, and once spent a year working on the border in El Paso, TX. She seeks to utilize her passion for storytelling in a way that will do some good in the world.

 

Lori CarriereLori Carriere is a fiction writer whose work has appeared or is forthcoming from Yemassee and Pif Magazine. She lives in Philadelphia, where she is currently working on a novel. 

 

 

Joshua Michael DemareeBorn and raised in central Pennsylvania, Joshua Michael Demaree holds a BA from the University of Pittsburgh in Film Studies and the History of Art & Architecture and an MA in Visual and Critical Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His criticism appears in the Los Angeles Review of Books and EXPO Chicago’s The Seen. He is a licensed driver and avid taxpayer and lives in West Philadelphia.

skauffmanphotoSean Kauffman grew up around the creeks of Newark, Delaware and currently lives in Philadelphia. After graduating from the University of Delaware with a degree in English, he lived in the mountains of Yellowstone National Park and by the ocean in southern Delaware before moving to the familiar city. He has served and bartended in restaurants, canvassed for environmental groups, and taught reading classes. He is an MFA student focusing on writing poetry, with an interest too in non-fiction.

 

fullsizerender-1Craig Knox stumbled into an interest in poetry through Etheridge Knight’s “Hard Rock Returns to Prison From the Hospital for the Criminal Insane.” When he’s not reading or writing, you can find Craig cooking or searching for the perfect rummage sale. Craig has worked in sales, e-commerce, and too many warehouses to count.

 

Brook McClurgBrook McClurg was born and raised in Southern California. He received his B.A. in Creative Writing from Columbia University in New York. He has previously lived in Edmonton, Canada, where he was a Seminary dropout; Dublin, Ireland, as both barista and busker on Grafton St.; and Kuwait, where he was a staff writer for the country’s oldest bilingual magazine. He has also released records and toured as a musician. He writes fiction and non-fiction.

headshot-rutgersAlex Rosenfeld grew up in Allentown, PA before venturing south for a BA in creative writing from Emory University. He writes fiction. 

 

 

Juliana Roth Juliana Roth grew up in Nyack, NY and went on to study English and environmental science at the University of Michigan. As an undergraduate, she was a Cowden Memorial Writing Fellow and recipient of the Quinn Creative Writing Prize for her short story collection. Her fiction, poetry, and essays have appeared in Irish Pages, Bear River Review, The Establishment, and DIN Magazine. An independent film she wrote and helped produce this past summer will be released in 2017. 

Matt StalnakerMatt Stalnaker is a Colorado-born writer who received his B.A. from Denison University where he double majored in Creative Writing and Bluegrass Music. He primarily writes creative nonfiction and works of memoir but also dabbles in fiction with a special fondness for magical realism. In another life, he plays and teaches guitar and Scruggs-style banjo.

 

Safiya WashingtonSafiya Washington is a writer and performer from Brooklyn, New York, living in Philadelphia. She received her Bachelors in English from Delaware Valley University. Between 2011 and 2016 Safiya has been featured on CNN and has toured colleges and universities. She is an international grand slam champion, winning Brave New Voices in 2011 and is the recipient of a fellowship from The Watering Hole.
