To access the on-line application form, visit Rutgers Graduate and Professional Admissions. Please note that the Rutgers graduate application has changed as of the 2022 season. 

The application fee for Fall 2024 applications is $70.

Supplemental Materials

In addition to completing the on-line application, you will need to submit the following:

Transcript  
Mail original, official transcript indicating the completion of a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to:

Letters of Recommendation
As part of the online application, you will be asked to provide the email addresses for the two people who will write your letters of recommendation. Once you submit your online application, your recommenders will receive an email from Graduate Admissions requesting that they submit their recommendation letter online. Please note: although the Graduate School application provides space for three email addresses, the MFA requires only two recommendation letters. Please do not send more than two. If you wish, you may use Interfolio to submit your letters of recommendation. Writing Sample and Personal Statement
Upload your writing sample and personal statement to the online portal. Your writing sample should represent your strongest work, whether published or not. You may submit fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, or a combination thereof. Prose should be double-spaced; poetry can be single-spaced. See below for page limits. Please do not send more than the specified number of pages.

     Fiction or Creative Nonfiction 
        Twenty to thirty pages of either completed shorter work or an excerpt from longer work
     Poetry
        Ten pages
     Multi-Genre
        Please select a primary genre: poetry, fiction, or creative-nonfictionand include between ten and fifteen pages of prose & five pages of poetry, or up to 30 pages of prose alone. 

Your personal statement (usually 1-2 pages, double- or 1.5-spaced) should include information about your writing background and goals. 


Optional: Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
GRE scores are optional. Really. They have no bearing on the application committee’s decision making. 

If you still wish to submit your score, you may do so using the Rutgers University code (2790), or you may mail paper scores to:
