There are two parts of the application process:

  1. Submission of an online application form
  2. Submission of supplemental materials

Supplemental Materials

In addition to completing the on-line application, you will need to submit the following:

Mail original, official transcript indicating the completion of a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to:

Letters of Recommendation
As part of the online application, you will be asked to provide the email addresses for the two people who will write your letters of recommendation. Once you submit your online application, your recommenders will receive an email from Graduate Admissions requesting that they submit their recommendation letter online. Please note: although the  Graduate School application provides space for three email addresses, the MFA requires only two recommendation letters. If you wish, you may use Interfolio to submit your letters of recommendation. Writing Sample
Your writing sample should represent your strongest work, whether published or not. You may submit fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, or a combination thereof. Prose should be double-spaced; poetry can be single-spaced. See below for page limits. Please do not send more than the specified number of pages.

     Fiction or Creative Nonfiction 
        Twenty to thirty pages of either completed shorter work or an excerpt from longer work
        Ten pages
        Please select a primary genre: poetry, fiction, or creative-nonfictionand include between ten and fifteen pages of prose & five pages of poetry, or up to 30 pages of      prose alone. 

Email your writing sample as a Word or PDF attachment to: Please use the file name format “Last Name, First Name – Writing Sample.docx” 
Please put your name, the genre of work, and the words “Writing Sample” in your email subject line (ex: “Smith – Fiction Writing Sample”). Multi-genre applicants should include both the name of their primary genre and the words “Multi-Genre” in the subject line (ex: “Smith – Fiction – Multi-Genre Writing Sample”). 

Personal Statement
Your personal statement (usually 1-2 pages, double- or 1.5-spaced) should include information about your writing background and goals. In the personal statement you may also indicate whether you are interested in an interdisciplinary fellowship. 
Email your personal statement as a Word or PDF attachment to: (You will also upload it to the online application). Please use the file name format “Last Name, First Name – Personal Statement.docx”
Please put your name and “personal statement” in your email subject line (ex: “Smith – Personal Statement”). 

Optional: Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
GRE scores are optional. Really. 

If you still wish to submit your score, you may do so using the Rutgers University code (2790), or you may mail paper scores to:
