There are two parts of the application process:

  1. Submission of an online application form and application fee
  2. Submission of supplemental materials

Online Application Form

The application fee for 2019-20 is $70.

Supplemental Materials

In addition to completing the on-line application, you will need to submit the following:

Mail original, official transcript indicating the completion of a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher to:

You may also send official transcripts through electronic services such as Interfolio or Parchment. Address them to 

Letters of Recommendation
As part of the online application, you will be asked to provide the email addresses for the two people who will write your letters of recommendation. Once you submit your online application, your recommenders will receive an email from Graduate Admissions requesting that they submit their recommendation letter online. Please note: although the  Graduate School application provides space for three email addresses, the MFA requires only two recommendation letters. Please do not send more than two. If you wish, you may use Interfolio to submit your letters of recommendation. Writing Sample and Personal Statement
Your writing sample should represent your strongest work, whether published or not. You may submit fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, or a combination thereof. Prose should be double-spaced; poetry can be single-spaced. See below for page limits. Please do not send more than the specified number of pages.

     Fiction or Creative Nonfiction 
        Twenty to thirty pages of either completed shorter work or an excerpt from longer work
        Ten pages
        Please select a primary genre: poetry, fiction, or creative-nonfictionand include between ten and fifteen pages of prose & five pages of poetry, or up to 30 pages of      prose alone. 

Your personal statement (usually 1-2 pages, double- or 1.5-spaced) should include information about your writing background and goals. 

In addition to uploading your writing sample and personal statement to the online application, please send them as attachments to a single email message. Follow these instructions for emailing: 

  1. Save your personal statement and writing sample under the following file name formats: “Last Name, First Name – Writing Sample.docx” and “Last Name, First Name – Personal Statement.docx.” .pdf is also acceptable. 
  2. In the email subject line, please put your name, the genre of work, and the words “Supplementary Materials.” (ex: “Smith – Fiction – Supplementary Materials”). Multi-genre applicants should include both the name of their primary genre and the words “Multi-Genre” in the subject line (ex: “Smith – Fiction – Multi-Genre – Supplementary Materials”).

  4. You will receive acknowledgment of receipt; please allow a few days due to the volume of applications. 

Optional: Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
GRE scores are optional. Really.
